ALLEA General Assembly

8-10 May 2019, Kursaal Bern

In 2019, ALLEA, the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities, will celebrate its 25th anniversary during its annual General Assembly, hosted by the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences.

The General Assembly is the annual meeting of ALLEA Member Academies. It convenes academies of sciences and humanities from 40 countries across the Council of Europe region. The General Assembly programme comprises several parts: scientific symposia, the award ceremony of the Madame de Staël Prize for Cultural Values and the business meeting. The symposium seeks to provide a platform for connecting excellence in Europe by bringing together high-ranking European policymakers, scientists, scholars and the interested public to debate on the most pressing issues faced by science and research. The Madame de Staël Prize for Cultural Values is awarded to eminent scholars, whose work represents a significant contribution to the cultural and intellectual values of Europe and to the idea of European integration.

Symposium "Science and Society in Present-Day Europe"
The last quarter century has been a period of tremendous change in the field of science, which has affected both disciplinary discourses and patterns of institutional governance. Areas such as energy, health or data sciences are seen as societal challenges and transdisciplinarily researched. European universities and research funding agencies have become engines of excellence and innovation that have a decisive impact on science and society. At the same time, political discussions are increasingly focusing on the approval rate rather than on scientific expertise. In this crisis of confidence, can the academies play a bridging function between the production and dissemination of science and once again help to break through the values that have applied to science since the Enlightenment?
