The rapid proliferation of the new chatbot ChatGPT is currently giving the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI) a lot of media attention. The generative potential of this newer generation of AI is also causing discussions in the scientific community. However, AI has already made its way into research long before the new chatbot, for example in climate research, particle physics or medicine. Machine learning tools are used, for example, to improve scientific methods, for research or now for writing scientific texts; corresponding programs have also already been listed as co-authors in research papers. AI applications are becoming increasingly important not only in research, but also in its evaluation. AI is therefore having a far-reaching impact on the way science is conducted - and this is likely to increase even more in the near future.
